Rye Country Day School Reviews

My son has been at RCDS for 4 years and has loved every minute of it. The academics are superb and the extra-curriculars are wonderful. He plays hockey now, but can't wait until middle school when he can fence and play bass in the Jazz band! How many schools can offer that? The kids are terrific as well--very kind and supportive of each other. Sending my child to RCDS was the best decision we ever made.

I am a graduate of RCDS and the parent of a current student. I think it is an exceptional school. Students receive very personal attention and although the work is challenging, the faculty and staff seem very committed to making sure that each student reaches his or her potential. There is a very wide range of extracurricular and sports activities particularly given the relatively small size of the student body. I am particularly impressed by the number of students who are active in a range of sports/theater/music, there seem to be fewer divisions of the student body into 'jock', 'arty' etc. categories. The school needs to become more racially/ethnically and economically diverse but appears to be aware of it and taking steps to address it. I'd recommend it without reservation.

RCDS is considered by many as the best private day school in the area and holds its reputation with even the most elite boarding schools. The school has earned a bad rap as a school for over privileged over-achieving preppies with even more ambitious parents. But the fact of the matter is that Rye Country Day besides getting their kids into the best schools offers some of the best athletics, drama, and extra-curricular activities often competing with far larger schools. One warning is that RCDS is not just a school its a life, meaning that the workload and commitment required will allow little room for outside activities. The school recruits the best teachers, coaches, and college counselers not to mention the best and brightest students in the entire tri-state area.

The school is OK, although not as good as Scarsdale public and Hackley (private) in my opinion. When I checked around Feb 2006, I could not find school's average SAT scores. I wonder how it compares with other competing private schools like Hackley and public schools like Scarsdale and Edgemont, who boast about their student's performance.

This school is terrible. The teachers are not passionate about their jobs, too much homework (which leaves the student no time to use his/her imagination). Both my children hated every minute there, and they switched to a public school (which they love). The only plus to RCDS is the sports. If you don't want to be a business man, don't go to this school. There are no extra-curricular activities, and the school is... Ii'm speechless... it's just awful.

This school is extremely well led and administered. The faculty is mostly excellent and very dedicated. Personal attention to students is remarkable. Wide range of choice (and difficulty) in courses. The honors courses are very challenging, even for very bright students. Some do not like the social atmosphere -- too many rich, privileged kids competing to get into great colleges, too little diversity and genuine intellectual passion. (The administration has been addressing these shortcomings and has made progress.) Overall, a truly great school.
